B.— ZOOL., subst. masc. plur. Les Anthophores. Genre d'hyménoptères du groupe des abeilles supérieures, subdivision des ,,Apidae inférieurs qui sont généralement solitaires et dépourvus de cire``. (Zoologie, t. 2, 1963, p. 887 [encyclop. de la Pléiade]) :
• Ce coléoptère [le sitaris] dépose ses œufs à l'entrée des galeries souterraines que creuse une espèce d'abeille, l'anthophore. La larve du Sitaris, après une longue attente, guette l'anthophore mâle au sortir de la galerie, se cramponne à elle, y reste attachée jusqu'au « vol nuptial »; là, elle saisit l'occasion de passer du mâle à la femelle, et attend tranquillement que celle-ci ponde ses œufs.
